The top-ranked USC women's water polo team sets up for a run at the 2006 NCAA Championship as the top seed into the tournament. The Women of Troy will face No. 8 seed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to open their NCAA action with a 6 p.m. game on May 12 in Davis, Calif. USC joins eight teams at this year's NCAA tourney, which is being hosted by UC Davis.
The Women of Troy are coming off a fourth-place finish at the MPSF Tournament, where Stanford went on to capture the tournament title and take an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. USC's undefeated run through the regular season and nation's best overall record at 25-2 helped the Trojans secure the top seed. A win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (15-9) would put USC into the semifinals, putting the Trojans within closer reach of their third national championship. USC already won titles in 1999 and 2004.
Stanford (22-4) earned the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 seed Marist (23-12). Third-place MPSF finisher and defending NCAA champ UCLA (26-4) is the No. 3 seed, playing No. 6 seed Hartwick (27-9). MPSF finalist Hawai'i (17-10) earned the last at-large berth and is the No. 4 seed, squaring off with host UC Davis (20-11). The winner of that Hawai'i-UC Davis game will play the USC-Claremont winner in the tournament semifinals.
