Sophomore outside hitter Juan Figueroa has been named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's Men's Volleyball Player of the Week after he led the Trojans to an upset over No. 5 UCLA and then the championship of the Golden Dome Classic last week.
Figueroa helped the Trojans to their first victory over the Bruins since 2000 (snapping a 14-match losing streak to UCLA) by getting 16 kills, 9 digs, 4 blocks and 2 aces on Feb. 1. Then, this past weekend, he had a match-high 15 kills while hitting .406, plus added 7 digs and 4 blocks, as USC swept New Jersey Institute of Technology in the opening round of the Golden Dome Classic. In the championship match against host Rutgers-Newark, he had a match-leading 23 kills to go with 8 digs and 2 blocks.
USC is 7-4 overall and riding a 4-match winning streak (its longest since 2001). The No. 13 Trojans, with a 4-2 MPSF record, travel to BYU for a pair of MPSF matches this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11).
