USC Men's Volleyball Sweeps NJIT At Golden Dome Classic

Juan Figueroa had 15 kills, 7 digs and 4 blocks and teammate Joao Grangeiro added 10 kills and 5 blocks to lead the No. 13 USC men's volleyball team to a 30-16, 30-26, 30-24 victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology in the opening round of the 28th annual Golden Dome Classic in Newark, N.J., on Friday (Feb. 3.)
USC improved to 6-4 overall, while NJIT fell to 3-3. It was the first-ever meeting between the schools.
On Saturday (Feb. 4), Troy faces host Rutgers-Newark (3-5), a 30-21, 30-22, 30-21 first round winner over Harvard (0-5) on Friday.
The Trojans outhit (.327 to .142) and outblocked (14.5 to 1) NJIT. Figueroa hit .406 and Grangeiro was at .409. Luke Morris had 16 digs for USC.
Eduardo Welker posted 13 kills and 5 digs for NJIT, while Amobi Armstrong added 10 kills and Leonardo Paludo had 13 digs.
After USC cruised to an easy win in the first game by hitting .552 to the Highlanders' .118, the match got tighter. In the second game, the Trojans scored four unanswered points to go up 29-26 before C.J. Schellenberg served an ace to win that game. USC trailed 11-2 in the third game, but answered with a 12-1 run and never trailed again.
