
USC Opens Title Defense With First Round Rout Over Redlands

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Brittany Hayes (Santa Ana/Foothill HS) and freshman Miranda Nichols (Santa Barbara/Santa Barbara HS) scored three goals each Friday as the No. 2 seed USC Women of Troy defeated the No. 7 seed Redlands Bulldogs, 18-2, in first-round action at the 2005 NCAA Championship. USC will face the winner of today's Stanford-Michigan match in a championship semifinal tomorrow at 3 p.m. Pacific.
The Women of Troy, who are the defending national champions, scored four goals in each of the first three periods and finished with a six-goal fourth period to overwhelm the Bulldogs. Lauren Wenger scored both of her goals in the opening period as the Women of Troy jumped out to a 4-1 lead and led 12-1 after three periods.
USC is now 24-4 on the season while Redlands falls to 19-12 overall.
