Women Of Troy Open 2005 Season With Doubleheader Routs

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The No. 2 and defending national champion USC women's water polo opened the 2005 regular season Saturday with a 16-5 win against host Cal State Northridge and 18-4 win over Cal State San Bernardino in a doubleheader.
In the USC-CSUN affair, the Women of Troy (2-0, 1-0) scored 10 unanswered goals to start off the match and were up 10-0 at the half. USC scored four times in the first and six times in the second, with Brittany Hayes recording a hat trick in the first half in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match.
The Matadors (1-1) got on the board two minutes into the second half when Brookes scored. But the Trojans (1-0) scored four straight to end the third with a 14-1 lead.
In the fourth, Brookes scored 29 seconds into the period to make it 14-2. After USC made it 15-2, Franz scored with 5:26 left to make it 15-3. Down 16-3, the Matadors netted the final two goals of the match, with Christopher scoring with 3:12 left and Brookes notching the hat trick with 2:25 remaining.
In goal, Sarah Mix made six saves in three quarters. Sylvia Cardim played the final period and did not make a save. For the Matadors, junior Graziella Caredda had nine saves between the pipes.
Against Cal State San Bernardino, USC again blanked its opponent in the first half, scoring twice in the first and seven times in the second to take a 9-0 halftime lead.
The Trojans would score four more times before the Coyotes (1-2) got on the board at 2:43 of the third to make it 13-1. USC scored three more times after that in the third and twice more in the fourth, while San Bernardino had three goals in the final frame. Alexandra Lopez had four saves in three quarters for USC, while Bree Valbuena had three stops in the fourth. For the Coyotes, Cooper made seven saves.
