No. 7 Trojans Fall At No. 4 Bears

USC's Larsen Jensen won a pair of races while Ous Mellouli, Paul Fahey and diver Michael Hilde also won events, but it wasn't enough against a strong Cal team as the No. 7 Trojans fell at the No. 4 Bears, 161-136, on Friday (Feb. 4) in Pac-10 dual-meet action.
USC dropped to 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the Pac-10. Cal improved to 8-0, 3-0.
Jensen won the 1,000y free (8:58.48) by almost 20 seconds over second-place teammate Tyler Storie (9:18.12). Freshman William Antisdale was fourth (9:25.72). Jensen later won the 500y free in an easy 4:26.59, out-dueling Cal's John Foster (4:28.87). Storie was third (4:34.65).
Mellouli won the 200y free in a season-best 1:37.42, out-racing a trio of Bears who finished second through fourth, all about a second behind the junior All-American's pace.
Fahey won the 400y IM in 4:00.68 while Mellouli took second (4:03.52) and teammates Storie (4:04.03) and Ryan Donaldson (4:08.22) were third and fourth, respectively. Fahey was also 0.21 off of first in the 200y breast, taking second in 2:01.07.
Sophomore diver Hilde won the 1-meter springboard with 335.55 points while sophomore Kenny Jenkins was third (312.53) and senior Ray Vincent took fourth (277.88). Hilde (331.80), Vincent (322.88) and Jenkins (276.45) went 2-3-4 on the 3-meter behind winner Louie Gagnet (335.33).
Sophomore Mihaly Flaskay barely lost the 100y breast, taking second in 55.59, a hair behind Henrique Barbosa's 55.54.
Cal sprinter Duje Draganja won both the 50y (19.79) and 100y free (43.57).
USC swims at No. 2 Stanford on Saturday (Feb. 5) at 1 p.m.
