USC junior forward Jeff McMillan has been named the 2003-04 Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Fred Hessler Award winner honoring the league's Newcomer of the Year.
For the twelfth straight season, the Newcomer of the Year was selected by the Pac-10 radio play-by-play announcers, and named in honor of the late UCLA broadcaster.
McMillan, a 6-foot-8 forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., is averaging 11.3 points and a team-high 8.7 rebounds, while shooting a Conference best 63.8 percent from the field for the Trojans.
McMillan wasted no time making an impact on the Trojan team, as he is the only player to have started all 26 games for the Trojans this season. He is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.3 points per game. He is leading the team in rebounding with 8.7 rebounds per game. McMillan posted nine double-doubles on the season, which included a career-high 19 rebounds with 18 points in a 78-77 overtime victory over UCLA. In addition to leading the league in field goal percentage (.638), McMillan is on pace to shatter USC's single-season field goal percentage record of 57.4 percent set by Steve Smith in 1979.
McMillan transferred to USC from Fordham where he started 14 of Fordham's 28 games during his sophomore season in 2002. That same season, McMillan led the Rams in rebounding (7.6 rpg) and was second on the team in scoring (10.2 ppg). McMillan sat out the 2003 season after transferring from Fordham, complying with NCAA transfer rules.
McMillan is the third Trojan to be honored as Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year since the award began in 1993.
