Trojans Win Wild 11-10 Shootout In The Big Easy

NEW ORLEANS - Freshman Daniel Perales got his first hit of the game with an RBI single to right in the top of the 12th Tuesday as the USC Trojans upset the No. 14 Tulane Green Wave with an 11-10 victory in 12 innings at Turchin Stadium. Perales capped a slugfest which saw a combined 32 hits as Tulane rallied to tie the game in the ninth and 10th innings. USC is now 3-1 on the current eight-game road trip and has won four of its last five games.
Tulane (12-6) had an opportunity for a win in the 11th when the Green Wave put the first two runners on base. After center fielder Matt Barket lined out to right and first baseman Wes Swackhamer reached on a fielder's choice, Tommy Manzella looped a fly ball to shallow right. Trojans' second baseman Dale Legaspi backtracked with the ball hitting his glove and bouncing out before Legaspi scooped it in mid-air for the final out to send the game into the 12th inning.
Joey Metropoulos led off the 12th with a double down the left field line for USC (8-10) and advanced to third on a sacrifice by left fielder Baron Frost. With the infield drawn in, Perales singled to right to score Metropoulos (3-for-5, double, home run).
Down by three, the Trojans scored four runs in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. With the bases loaded, Moon walked and Blake Sharpe hit an infield single for the go-ahead run. USC added another run in the ninth for a two-run lead, but Tulane battled back. Brian Bogusevic hit a two-out double to left off Bret Butler (1-0), followed by an RBI single from Barket. Trojans' catcher Jeff Clement threw out Barket at second to send the game to extra innings.
Legaspi used a bunt single in the 10th to reach safely, advancing to second on a sacrifice by Cyle Hankerd and scoring on a single up the middle by Sharpe. Once again, the Green Wave answered with a bloop RBI single by left fielder Nathan Southard.
Bogusevic went 3-for-5 with four RBI, including a three-run homer as part of a five-run third inning. Clement and Moon hit their first home runs of the season for the Trojans.
Butler earned the win after relieving Clayton Wentworth in the eighth. He allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Both teams will play on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. (Central) in the final game of the two-game series. USC will then travel to South Alabama for a three-game series, beginning on Friday (March 19) at 6 p.m. All games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
