Cal Baptist Men's Volleyball Sweeps USC

LOS ANGELES - Seidu Ajanako had 20 kills, 12 digs and 3 aces to lead the Cal Baptist men's volleyball team to a 30-22, 30-24, 30-27 win over USC in a non-conference match on Tuesday (Feb. 3) in USC's North Gym.
Cal Baptist, the NAIA's second-ranked team, improved to 4-2, while USC lost its eighth consecutive match to drop to 1-8.
Ajanako hit .548, while fellow Ghana native Shamsu Awudu hit .591 with 14 kills and Shaun Dyk hit .519 with 17 kills and 3 blocks.
The Lancers outhit USC, .505 to .296, and posted more blocks (8.5 to 2.5), digs (31 to 21) and aces (5 to 3).
For USC, Pedro Leal came off the bench to get 10 kills (hitting .562) and 2 aces, while Joao Grangeiro also had 10 kills with 5 digs and Jeff Bailey hit .500 with 7 kills and 2 blocks.
USC fell behind quickly in the first game, 4-1, and could never close the gap as CBU hit .515. In the second game, the Trojans led 8-4 before giving up the next 4 points (and 7 of the next 8) to relinquish the lead for good as Cal Baptist hit at a .613 clip. Troy had a 15-10 lead in the third game, but the Lancers caught them at 18-18; then, with the score knotted at 25-25, CBU scored the next 3 points on a USC serving error and kills by Ajanako and Dyk to gain control.
USC next hosts No. 7 Stanford on Thursday (Feb. 5) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at 7 p.m. in the North Gym.
