TEMPE, Ariz. - USC All-American middle blocker Bibiana Candelas recorded a match-high 17 kills and five blocks to lead the two-time defending national champion Women of Troy (7-2, 2-1 Pac-10) to a three-game sweep over host Arizona State (5-6, 0-3 Pac-10) Friday night in Pac-10 volleyball action at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devils put up a fight in each game, but it was not enough as the Trojans began their desert series with a 30-21, 30-28, 30-21 victory in Tempe. It marked USC's 17th-straight win over Arizona State, highlighted by a dramatic second game which saw the Women of Troy score eight unanswered points for the comeback win.
In addition to Candelas' match-high 19.5 points and .455 hitting percentage, Phoenix native Emily Adams also put up big numbers with 13 kills on a .591 attack percentage and added six blocks (three solo) to finish with 18.5 points. Senior outside hitter Keao Burdine led all players with 15 digs.
The Trojans sprang out to a 15-8 lead to begin the night. Arizona State would get no closer than five points for the remainder of the game, as the Women of Troy started things off with a 30-21 first set victory.
Game two remained tied through 13-13 before ASU managed to gain its first lead at 14-13. Two and three points at a time, the Sun Devils extended the advantage and led by as much as seven at 26-19. What seemed like a likely ASU victory, completely turned when the Women of Troy embarked on an 11-2 run of their own. Three kills apiece by Burdine and Adams led USC to a comeback 30-28 win.
The loss put ASU at a 2-0 deficit entering the third game. USC led by as much as eight points (19-11, 29-21) in the final set en route to the deciding nine-point victory.
USC travels to Tucson on Saturday, Oct. 2, to face 17th-ranked Arizona at McKale Center at 7 p.m.
