Trojans Overpowered By No. 1 Pepperdine

Malibu, Calif. - The top-ranked Pepperdine Waves opened their conference schedule by overpowering the USC Trojans with a quick 3-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Firestone Fieldhouse. The scores were 30-23, 30-23, and 30-28.
With the win, the Waves improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The Trojans fall to 1-5 and 0-3 in conference action.
Pepperdine hit .440 in the match after completed 53-91attacks, while holding USC to 41 kills and a .188 hitting percentage. The Waves also outblocked the Trojans 12.0 to 5.5 and recorded 67.0 total points versus USC's 48.5. Eight of the blocks tallied for the home team were block solos.
Three Pepperdine players totaled double-digit kills beginning with senior Fred Winters who completed 15 on 22 attempts for a .591 average. He also had six digs and two block solos for a second-best 17.0 points. Junior outside hitter Sean Rooney led all players with points on the day, as he had 14 kills (.480 percent), three digs, three block solos, and one block assist for 17.5 points. Freshman Tanner Sutherland rounded out the double-figure killers with 11.
Setter John Mayer had an overall respectable match after accounting for 44-79 assists (.557), a match-high two service aces, seven digs, and three block assists. Libero James Ka paced both teams with eight digs and he also tallied 24 service receptions (.960 percent).
For the Trojans, Pedro Leal led his squad with 12 kills and Evan Burden totaled seven digs.
