The Facts
The Bay Area visits the Southland this week as the USC women's basketball team (8-7, 5-2 Pac-10) -- winners of the last three-of-four conference games -- host California (9-7, 2-5) and No. 7 Stanford (14-2, 7-0) on Friday, Jan. 23, and Sunday, Jan. 25. Despite the tragedy Cal has had to face this week with the death of teammate Alisa Lewis, the Golden Bears decided to continue play and will travel to the Sports Arena at 7 p.m. on Friday. The game can be heard and followed on www.usctrojans.com. On Sunday, the Women of Troy host the Cardinal at 2 p.m. at the Sports Arena. Fans can catch this match-up on KMPC 1540-AM or on the internet at www.usctrojans.com.
USC is coming off a split at the Arizona schools, where the Women of Troy fell to Arizona, 75-64, on Jan. 15, but bounced back to defeat Arizona State, 68-65, on Jan. 17. The win over the Sun Devils put USC back in the win column for only the second time this season and kept the Women of Troy among the tops teams in the Pac-10. Entering this week, the Trojans are in third place in the conference race, behind undefeated Stanford and Arizona (6-1 in the Pac-10). The Women of Troy were led by Eshaya Murphy in last week's split. Murphy averaged a team-best 13.0 points per game, in addition to 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 steals.
Cal Mourns Death Of Alisa Lewis
Cal forward Alisa Lewis, a 20-year-old third-year letterwinner from Spokane, Wash., died Monday morning (Jan. 19) apparently of bacterial meningitis. Doctors say final cause of death is pending further tests. Lewis died at Kaiser Medical Center in Oakland. She was taken to the emergency room early in the morning complaining of a severe headache, rash and flu-like symptoms. The Cal athletic department hosted a memorial for Lewis on campus on Thursday, Jan. 22. The women's basketball team made the decision to go ahead with the scheduled games this week.
USC Faces Hardship, Twice
USC has unfortunately been a second party to team hardship over the last two years. Last season, Washington player Kayla Bert faced a near-death experience prior to the Huskies match-ups against UCLA and USC on Jan. 3 and 5. Luckily Burt survived, but she had to end her basketball career. Just as Cal has done, last year's Washington squad also decided to continue play and made the trip to Los Angeles.
Youth Takes Over
Three freshmen - Eshaya Murphy, Jamie Funn and Jamie Hagiya - made the start against Arizona State on Jan. 17. For Murphy and Funn it marked the first start of their careers. It was Hagiya's second start this season. USC beat the Sun Devils that afternoon with three freshmen, one sophomore (Meghan Gnekow) and a senior (Ebony Hoffman).
In The Running
Despite a difficult nonconference season, the Trojans are in the running for the Pac-10 title with a 5-2 conference record. The loss at Arizona gave the Wildcats sole possession of second place and moved USC to third-place. Stanford currently leads the conference race with a 7-0 Pac-10 record.
Game Recaps
at Arizona -- USC's late surge was not enough as the Women of Troy fell to Arizona, 75-64, on Thursday night. Despite their second-half efforts, the Trojans were unable to overcome a 16-point halftime deficit. With four minutes remaining in the opening period, a three-pointer by Eshaya Murphy brought USC within two points, 30-28, but the half was far from over for the Women of Troy. At 3:54 Arizona embarked on a 14-0 run, scoring seven consecutive baskets and keeping the Trojans scoreless for the remaining minutes. USC miscues, including five turnovers and six missed shots, gave Arizona a 16-point lead at the break, 44-28. Arizona didn't seal the game until the final minutes, however. The Wildcats led 69-55 with 5:05 remaining in the game after a lay-in. USC then scored nine straight to close to within five, 69-64, with 49 seconds left before the Wildcats sealed the outcome with free throws and a breakaway lay-up. Ebony Hoffman led USC with 17 points, while Eshaya Murphy had 15. Murphy also contributed a game-best eight steals in the effort. Neither team was able to protect the ball as USC finished with 30 turnovers and notched 20 steals. Arizona posted 36 turnovers and 19 steals.
at Arizona State -- Behind an entirely new starting lineup, featuring three freshmen, USC was able to outlast Arizona State for a 68-65 victory on Jan. 17 in Tempe, Ariz. The Women of Troy had to hold off a 15-to-8 ASU rally in the final minutes to secure the win. It was a defensive battle from the start. After the first 20 minutes, the two teams had already collected 23 fouls and committed 26 total turnovers. USC worked its way back from a 10-point (20-10 at 6:20) deficit to enter the lockerroom down by only one, 28-27. With a 12-8 run to start the second half, the Women of Troy took their first lead on Rometra Craig's fastbreak layup to make it 36-35 with 15:32 on the clock. USC extended its lead to 56-44 thanks to nine-consecutive points from Eshaya Murphy over a two-minute span. ASU did not hit a field goal for more than seven minutes, scoring only from the free throw line until a layup by Carrie Buckner ended the drought at with 2:52 remaining in the game. Despite their shooting troubles, the Sun Devils did not give up. ASU scored three, three-pointers and hit six total field goals in the final 2:30 to make a 10-point ball game into a three-point contest as the clock ran down. USC's 8-of-12 effort at the line down the stretch was enough to keep the Women of Troy in the lead and secure the victory.
Against Ranked Opponents
USC will face its fourth ranked opponent of the season this Sunday, Jan. 25, when it hosts No. 7 Stanford. The Women of Troy have so far faced No. 11 Minnesota (Nov. 29), No. 1 UConn (Dec. 7) and No. 14/13 Colorado (Dec. 20). USC is 0-3 in these games.
USC's strength of schedule is currently ranked No. 24 according to the Jan. 18 WBCA/Summerville RPI report, which also lists the Trojans as 53rd in the RPI.
California Connections

* Bears' junior guard Kristin Iwanaga and Rometra Craig both attended Archbishop Mitty High in San Jose, Calif. The two were teammates for three seasons.
* Cal's roster boasts three players from Southern California, including O'Keith, Renee Wright (Antelope Valley) and Khadijah Coakley (San Diego).

The Revolving Door

Win And Win Big
USC has won seven games this season by an average of 17.3 points. The Women of Troy have lost games by an average of 10 points and are 0-5 in games decided by nine points or less.
More Hard To Ignore Stats
USC is 0-5 when trailing with five minutes remaining *** The Trojans are 2-0 when shooting better than 50 percent or when playing at the Lyon Center *** USC is 0-2 when on television.
Hoffman Adding Up Double Doubles
Ebony Hoffman collected her fifth consecutive double-double of the season with 14 points and 16 rebounds against Oregon State on Jan. 4. . She now has 33 double doubles for her career.
A Narrow Gap Between Wins and Losses
