Men's Tennis Competes at Sherwood Collegiate Cup

WESTLAKE, Calif. - The play of freshman Jamil Al-Agba and the doubles tandem of Drew Hoskins and Johan Berg highlighted USC's performance at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup held Jan. 15 through 18 at the Sherwood Country Club in Westlake, Calif. Al-Agba, Hoskins and Berg advanced to semifinal round of the singles and doubles tournament before playing their final match on Sunday.
The four-day tournament featured players from top teams such as Stanford, UCLA, California, Baylor, San Diego State and USC.
In his first tournament as a Trojan, Al-Agba defeated James Wan of Stanford, 6-3, 6-2, and Chris Lam of UCLA, 6-4, 6-3, in the first two rounds of play. With a three-set victory over Baylor's Matias Marin, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, in the quarterfinal, Al-Agba moved into the semifinal round where he was eventually eliminated by Kris Kwinta of UCLA, 7-6, 6-2.
Hoskins and Berg defeated John Pettit and Tyler Browne of California, 8-5, in the opener, then advanced to the semifinals with a walkover. The Trojan pair fell to UCLA's Kwinta and Alberto Francis, 8-3, in the semifinal round.
