Men's Volleyball Upsets Cal-Northbridge, 3-1

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Joe Nargi had 11 kills, but sixth-ranked Cal State Northridge was upset 23-30, 28-30, 30-25, 25-30 by USC Wednesday night in the Matadome.
With the win, the Trojans improve to 5-14 overall and 2-11 in the MPSF, while the Matadors slip to 12-7 overall and 8-6 in conference play.
USC was led by Mark Dusharme's 19 kills, while Josh Day added 12 kills and Ian Gallagher chipped in 11. Day also added a match-high 11 blocks.
Although Nargi did have 11 kills, the Trojans stifled the Matadors' top two hitters as Nargi hit .067 and Nils Nielsen had just five kills and hit .000 for the match. Scott Arneson was the only other Northridge player to record double figure kills with 10. Stan Douglas led the Matadors with nine blocks.
USC came out quick winning the first two games, hitting .429 in game one and .294 in game two. Dusharme had nine kills in the first game as the Trojans limited the Matadors to a .162 hitting average. Northridge got six kills from Tamer George in game two, but Dusharme answered with four kills of his own and USC had a two games to none lead.
Northridge battled back to take game three, 30-25 as Cary Hanson and Brian Waite came off the bench to knock down seven kills between them. In game four, the Trojans opened up a 29-20 lead before the Matadors staved off five match points before Dusharme put away a kill to end the match.
USC ended up out-blocking Northridge 19.0 to 18.0 and had 44 digs to 30 for the Matadors. The Trojans also recorded seven aces to just one for Northridge.
