Oct. 24, 2003
Sophomore Ous Mellouli and freshman Larsen Jensen both posted swimming wins and freshman Michael Hilde won in diving, but USC still trailed a strong Texas team, 102-65, after the first day of a two-day meet begun on Friday (Oct. 24) at McDonald's Swim Stadium.
Mellouli won the first individual event of the day, taking the 400m IM in 4:22.22, followed by USC senior co-captain Trent Staley (4:25.95) and Texas junior John Nabors (4:27.32).
Jensen, an American record holder, won his first USC event of his career by taking the final individual race of the day, the 400m free, in 3:51.72, barely out-touching teammate Mellouli, who was second in 3:51.73.
The Longhorn men, who feature three world record holders on the squad, swept the 100m free, led by senior Dony Diers' first-place mark of 50.99.
One of the world record holders, sophomore Aaron Peirsol, won his specialty, the 200m back, in a breezy 1:58.39. Staley was third in 1:59.87.
Another world record holder, Brendan Hansen, won the 200m breast in 2:14.17 and was followed by teammate Christian Schurr (2:17.68). Mellouli was third in 2:21.47.
Senior Ian Crocker, Texas' third world record holder, won the 100m fly in an easy 53.75, leading another Texas sweep in the event.
Hilde joined junior Ray Vincent to go 1-2 on the 3-meter springboard. Hilde won with 554.30 while Vincent had 526.85. Texas' Jonathan Linette was third with 524.15.
The meet finishes on Saturday (Oct. 25) at 11 a.m. at USC.
