LOS ANGELES - Keith Busam had 11 kills to lead the No. 12-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team to a 30-28, 30-25, 30-22 win over unranked USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (Jan. 25) in USC's Lyon Center.
The Gauchos improved to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in the MPSF, while USC fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the MPSF.
Busam, who hit .500 in the match, also had 7 digs, 2 aces and 2 blocks. Teammate Michael Kennedy had 6 blocks and Dave Jensen added 5 blocks.
For USC, Ian Gallagher had a match-high 13 kills, while Josh Day hit .917 with 11 kills in 12 attempts (zero errors). Joao Grangeiro had a match-best 14 digs.
UCSB outhit USC, .327 to .255, and had 10.0 blocks to Troy's 4.5
In the first game, the Trojans overcame an 11-3 deficit to nearly catch up at 26-25, but the Gauchos held on. After USC opened up a 5-1 lead in the second game, UCSB tied it at 6-6 before pulling away. USC fell behind 4-1 in the third game and trailed the rest of the way.
USC next travels to No. 8 Long Beach State for an MPSF match on Tuesday (Jan. 28) at 7:30 p.m.
