Trojans Fall To Pepperdine In MPSF Opener

LOS ANGELES- Sean Rooney and Fred Winters each had 12 kills to lead the No. 8-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team to a 30-20, 30-22, 30-17 win over USC in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both squads on Friday (Jan. 17) in the USC Lyon Center.
The Waves improved to 3-1 overall, while the Trojans fell to 1-3.
Pepperdine, which never trailed in the match, hit .435 and had 14.5 blocks, while Troy hit just .129 and got 3.5 blocks. Winters hit .571 and had 7 digs, while teammate Brad Keenan hit .538 with 8 kills and 11 blocks.
For USC, Mark Dusharme had a match-best 14 kills while hitting .346 and Jeff Bailey added 9 kills as he hit .346.
The match was the first home appearance in 2003 for the Trojans and new head coach Turhan Douglas. It also marked the team's return to the Lyon Center for the first time since 1997.
USC next hosts No. 6 Cal State Northridge on Wednesday (Jan. 22) at 7 p.m. in the North Gym.
