LOS ANGELES--The top 3 seeds--No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 USC and No. 3 UCLA--of the 2002 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Championship, along with fifth-seeded Long Beach State, advanced to the winner's bracket semifinals following wins in first round play at USC on Friday (April 26).
The 49ers upset No. 4 California, 8-7, in the day's final game. The higher seeded teams won the day's other 7 games: No. 8 Hawaii beat No. 9 UC Santa Barbara, 6-4; No. 7 San Diego State defeated No. 10 UC Irvine, 14-8; No. 6 San Jose State beat No. 11 Pacific, 8-7; Long Beach State beat No. 12 Cal State Northridge, 12-2; Stanford beat Hawaii, 14-4; USC defeated San Diego State, 8-4; and UCLA beat San Jose State, 12-5.
In winner's bracket semifinal play on Saturday (April 27), Stanford will play Long Beach State at 3 p.m. and USC will meet UCLA at 4:15 p.m. In Saturday's loser bracket games, UC Santa Barbara faces Cal State Northridge at 10 a.m., UC Irvine plays Pacific at 11:15 a.m., California meets Hawaii at 12:30 p.m. and San Jose State plays San Diego State at 1:45 p.m. The final day of competition is on Sunday (April 28), beginning with the 11th place match at 10 a.m. followed by 5 more games. The championship match is at 4:15 p.m., with the winner getting an automatic berth into the 4-team NCAA Championship on May 11-12, also at USC. Friday's first round results:

Drue Wawrzynski scored late in the third quarter to give No. 5-seeded Long Beach State (19-11) its final 3-goal lead and then the 49ers held off a rally by No. 4 California (16-8) to post an 8-7 upset. Roberta Stewart had 3 goals for LBSU, while Wawrzynski and Angelica Garcia added 2 goals each. Jodie Needles and Cara Chlebicki each had 2 goals for the Golden Bears. The 49ers trailed 2-1 midway through the first quarter, but then opened up 5-2, 7-4 and 8-5 leads. LBSU advances to the winner's bracket semifinals and will play Stanford, while California meets Hawaii, with both games on Saturday (April 27).

Kristyn Pulver had 2 goals for the Bruins, who opened up a 3-0 lead and were never threatened. Jessica Levin had 2 goals for the Spartans. UCLA advances to the winner's bracket semifinals to face USC on Saturday (April 27), while San Jose State will meet San Diego State, also on Saturday.

Casey Finnegan scored twice for the Aztecs. USC advances to Saturday's (April 27) winner's bracket semifinals against the winner of the UCLA-San Jose State game, while San Diego State plays the loser of that Bruin-Spartan game, also on Saturday.

Julie Gardner and Hannah Luber had 2 goals each for the Cardinal, who held a 9-1 halftime lead. Erin Kocher scored twice for the Rainbow Wahine. Stanford advances to the winner's bracket semifinals against the winner of the California-Long Beach State game, while Hawaii will face the loser of that Golden Bear-49er match. Novick had 2 goals, while UCSB's Mary Blumberg also scored twice. The Rainbow Wahine face top-seeded Stanford later on Friday, while the Gauchos will face the loser of the Long Beach State-Cal State Northridge game on Saturday (April 27).
