Freshman outside hitter Sean Rooney collected a team-high total of 11 kills on Tuesday night, helping No. 2 ranked Pepperdine roll to a 30-26, 34-32, 30-23 win over local rival USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Senior outside hitter Lance Walker and sophomore outside hitter Fred Winters both collected 10 kills as Pepperdine improved to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in the MPSF.
USC, 4-10 overall and 1-7 in MPSF play, lost its seventh consecutive match. Senior outside hitter Brook Billings led the Trojans with a match-high total of 15 kills.
The key to the match was a dramatic turnaround in the second game. USC raced out to a 24-17 advantage, and the Trojans appeared to be on their way to tying the match at one game each.
However, Pepperdine was able to scramble its way back into the game, scoring seven consecutive points behind the tough serving of senior setter Beau Daniels. The Waves went on to win the game by a 34-32 margin. Pepperdine finished the night with a .310 team attack percentage, while USC was limited to a .206 team hitting mark.
Walker collected a match-high total of six blocks as the Waves won the blocking battle by a 10-7 margin.
