STANFORD, Calif. - With a game-best 21 points and her fourth double-double of the season, USC freshman Ebony Hoffman guided the Women of Troy in a 62-59 upset victory over the Stanford Cardinal on Thursday in front of 3,237. The win was the Trojans' first over the Cardinal since 1994, and USC's first at Maples Pavilion since the 1986-87 season.
With the win, the Women of Troy put an end to a four-game slump and improve to 10-15 overall, 5-10 in the Pac-10. Stanford drops to 15-10 overall, 9-6 in conference play.
Tieing a career best in points, Hoffman also led on the boards with 13. Off the bench, Tiffany Elmore added 14 points, hitting 4-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the line.
Stanford junior Lindsey Yamasaki led Stanford with 16 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Nicole Powell tallied 15 points. Yamasaki was 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
The Cardinal fell in the final moments to the Women of Troy after leading for the first 19 minutes of the second half. Stanford pushed to a 10 point lead following the break (47-37 at 9:43), but watched as the Trojans went on an 11-4 run to cut the margin to three, 51-48 (6:21).
With 58 seconds remaining in the game Denise Woods tied the game at 59-59 on a layup from Jessica Cheeks. Hoffman then scored to give USC its first two-point lead since the start of the game with 12 seconds to go. Stanford's attempts were no good and a Yamasaki foul put Aisha Hollans on the line with one second on the clock. Hollans hit the second free throw to make the final score 62-59.
The game remained a close one throughout, with Stanford leading by one point, 28-27, at halftime.
USC travels to Berkeley on Saturday, March 3, for a 1 p.m. tipoff against the Cal Golden Bears. The game can be heard live on usctrojans.com.
