
Women's Water Polo Opens 2001 Season With Two Wins

SAN DIEGO - The USC women's water polo team opened the 2001 season with wins over UC Santa Barbara, 12-5, and host UC San Diego, 13-9, in first day action at the UC San Diego Arena NoGrip Invitational. The Women of Troy unleashed its new scoring triple threat of All-Americans Nina Wengst, Aniko Pelle and newcomer Sofia Konoukh. Konoukh was a member of the Russian team that won the bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
Konoukh led USC with three goals in the match against UC Santa Barbara while Pelle, the 2000 Peter J. Cutino Award winner as the nation's top female water polo player, and Wengst scored two goals each. In the second match, the Trojans held a commanding 12-3 lead after three periods. Pelle led with a team-high four goals with Wengst scoring three times.
Day two of the tournament will take place on Sunday.
