LOS ANGELES - Mary-Frances Monroe's goal at 62:16 proved to be the difference Sunday as the No. 2 UCLA Bruins defeated the USC Trojans, 2-1, at Drake Stadium in Pac-10 Conference action. The win snapped the Women of Troy's seven-game unbeaten streak as the Bruins rebounded from a 3-0 loss on Thursday at Santa Clara.
The Bruins (12-1, 3-0) rallied from a 1-0 deficit after the Trojans (7-4-1, 2-1) scored early at 5:04 on a breakaway goal by Brittany Savelkoul. The match changed momentum when USC lost freshman Shannon Cross to a knee injury in the eighth minute of play and would not return. Staci Duncan tied the match at 13:07 with a chip shot over the head of USC goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes.
UCLA dominated the first half with a 7-1 margin for shots, but USC answered back with a 7-3 advantage in the second half..
The Trojans will travel to Oregon State on Friday (Oct. 26) for a 3 p.m. and Oregon on Sunday (Oct. 28) at 1 p.m.
