Los Angeles, Calif. -- No. 4 USC women's volleyball (4-0) recorded its quickest win of the season, defeating Texas-San Antonio, 3-0 (15-5, 15-1, 15-7), in one hour-three minutes. The UTSA Roadrunners fall to 3-3 on the second day of the USC Met-Rx Invitational at North Gym.
The Trojans have swept each of their first four opponents this season, recording 12 consecutive game wins for the first time since 1994. USC has also not allowed an opponent to hit above 10 percent after holding UTSA to a .020 attack percentage on the night. The Women of Troy hit .430 and added 48 kills, 37 digs and 9.0 blocks.
USC dominated the first two games, holding the Roadrunners to six total points. Returning with momentum in the third game, UTSA came within one point (5-6) after taking advantage of a USC attack error. Following five possession changes, a kill by Trojan freshman April Ross sparked the Trojans' 8-2 run to finish the match.
Seven Women of Troy hit above .300 in the match, including outside hitters Antoinette Polk (.500), Lauren Killian (.545) and Ross (.529) who each converted more than half of their attempts. Senior Janae Henry led with 13 blocks and junior Jennifer Pahl added four blocks. The Roadrunners were led by Stacy Schmidt who added nine kills (.136) and seven digs.
In earlier tournament matches, UC Irvine captured two wins by defeating Texas San-Antonio 3-1 (18-16, 15-8, 14-16, 15-6), and Rhode Island 3-1 (6-15, 15-8, 15-2, 15-10).
In the earliest match of the day, UCI and UTSA battled through four games in two hours, 30 minutes. With each team tallying nearly 100 kills, UC Irvine's sophomore setter Jamie Pilbeam broke an NCAA four-game record with 107 assists. The previous record of 95 assists was recorded by Renata Menshikova of Central Florida against Oral Roberts on Nov. 14, 1997. With 109 total assist for UCI, the mark also breaks the NCAA four-game team record previously held by Purdue and San Diego State. Purdue posted 100 assists on Nov. 22, 1996 against Michigan, while SDSU recorded 100 against Colorado State on Nov. 13, 1993
