PROVO, Utah - Senior Andrea Warner (Dana Point/Dana Hills HS) scored in the first half Thursday as the No. 10 USC Trojans held off the No. 23 host BYU Cougars in a 1-1 tie. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Arase (La Canada/La Canada HS) played one of her best games ever, making 21 saves for the Trojans (two shy of the school record, held by Cathy Zoccoli in 1993 vs. Stanford).
The Cougars (7-3-1) outshot the Trojans (7-1-1) by a 38-7 margin in a classic contest that had the feel of a playoff game. Warner opened the scoring at 38:36 from 10 yards out in a scramble in the box and scored to the left of BYU goalkeeper Jennifer Waldron.
With the Trojans leading 1-0 at half, BYU answered with a goal by Sara Reading, who scored on a bender into the lower left of the goal from 20 yards out.
The Cougars put constant pressure on the Trojans, who changed from their current 3-4-3 system to the 3-5-2 style they had used the last couple of years. With the thicker grass and strong midfield play of the Cougars, Head Coach Jim Millinder switched to the 3-5-2 as the Trojans absorbed the Cougars' attack.
"This was a great game for us, a playoff type of game," said Millinder. "We chose to sit back, but we had great chances to finish. We have not played a team that has been this athletic in the last three or four years. I think BYU is as good as anyone in the country in that respect. With the altitude, our kids did a brilliant job. We really battled tonight."
USC travels to Salt Lake City for a match against the University of Utah on Saturday (Sept. 30) at 1 p.m.
