SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Sophomore Jennifer Prigmore (Norman, Okla.) recorded a goal and an assist as the No. 10 USC Trojans improved to 8-1-1 on the season with a 4-1 win Saturday over the University of Utah Utes (7-4-1).
The win snapped the Utes' six-game winning streak. USC now matches the 1997 team with the best record after 10 games as the Trojans now have a four-game unbeaten streak. The four goals today also represented the most by the Trojans in a game this season.
USC had to rally after the Utes opened the scoring in the first half with a goal by Amy Kofoed on a breakaway. But the complexion of the game changed at 30:34 when Utah's Lesa Zollinger was called for a deliberate handball in the penalty box, drawing the automatic red card. Senior Isabelle Harvey (Cap-Rouge, Quebec, Canada) knocked in the penalty kick on the right side of the goal to tie the game at 1-1. It was Harvey's fourth goal of the season.
The Trojans would take the lead for good on another penalty kick four minutes later when Utah was called for another foul in the box against Harvey. Senior Andrea Warner (Dana Point/Dana Hills HS) took the penalty kick and scored her second goal in as many games.
USC dominated the match with a 30-7 margin in shots, but did not take advantage of the one-man advantage in the first 25 minutes of the second half.
Prigmore recorded her goal at 70:09 with a 20-yard blast from the left side after receiving a pass from freshman midfielder Megan Abbamonto (Mission Viejo/Capistrano Valley HS). Freshman Jessica Edwards (Mesa, AZ/Dobson HS) finished the Trojans' scoring on a shot that went into the net past Utah goalkeeper Courtney Hills as time expired.
"I was disappointed in our effort today," said Head Coach Jim Millinder. "We talked about Utah being a good team and we just didn't come out with the right focus. I hate when an opposing player gets ejected because it gives our team the mentality that we don't have to work as hard. It took us too long to put the opponent away today. When we have an advantage like that, we need to finish opponents earlier and we haven't done that all season."
"We have to regroup and play a lot harder with more heart if we are going to do well in the Pac-10 Conference."
The Trojans open Pac-10 Conference play next Sunday (Oct. 8) with a 1 p.m. match against cross-town rival UCLA at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Tickets will be available at the gate or by calling the USC ticket office at (213) 740-GOSC.
