GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore Ali Fennell (Santa Ana/Mater Dei HS) and freshman Megan Abbamonto (Mission Viejo/Capistrano Valley HS) scored in a seven-minute span Sunday as the No. 10 USC Trojans rallied for a 2-1 win over the Central Florida Golden Knights.
Conditions for the game were dismal as the effects of Hurricane Gordon could be felt at Percy Beard Stadium. A driving rain mixed with winds of up to 30 miles per hour made it difficult on a rain-soaked field.
UCF (2-7) opened the scoring at 10:18 when Claire Kohake put in a rebound off USC (6-1) junior goalkeeper Shaelyn Fernandes on a cross by Cally Howell. With a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Golden Knights switched from their gold jerseys to their road black uniforms in order to stay dry. But the Trojans quickly changed the game in the opening minutes.
Fennell put her goal in at 49:27 off a save made by UCF goalkeeper Maria Banuls. Banuls had made a save off a shot from Jackie Fodor, who received a cross from junior Christy Callier. The Women of Troy scored a similar goal at 56:34 when Abbamonto received a cross from freshman Jessica Edwards, who beat Banuls to a ball on the right side. Fodor got credit for another assist, her second of the game.
USC outshot UCF by a 22-5 margin, including a 13-2 edge in the second half.
"It was a good result for our team," said USC Head Coach Jim Millinder. "The conditions were a great equalizer for Central Florida, but our kids really came out to play in the second half. We just wanted to get a result and get out of here based on the weather."
The Trojans had their flight cancelled tonight and will return home tomorrow. USC will host Loyola Marymount on Friday (Sept. 22) at McAlister Field in a 3 p.m. contest. Tickets for the match against Loyola Marymount are available at the gate or by calling the USC ticket office at (213) 740-GOSC.
