Women's Volleyball Sweeps Texas in Season Opener

AUSTIN, Texas -- Seventh-ranked USC women's volleyball dealt 18th-ranked Texas its first season-opening loss since 1995 with a 3-0 victory (15-6, 17-5, 15-4) Friday in the Texas Invitational at Gregory Gymnasium. The Women of Troy held Texas to a .018 hitting percentage and kept each player to no more than five kills in the match. As a team, USC hit .274 received a match-high 10 kills (.400) and 14 digs from senior Janae Henry.
The Trojans quickly grabbed a 15-6 victory in game one after jumping out to a 9-1 lead. Texas recorded only four kills and a -.071 hitting efficiency, while USC converted 13-of-32 attempts (.281). The Longhorns rebounded in game two, matching the Trojans point-for-point as the two teams knotted the game at 14-14 on a kill by USC outside hitter Antoinette Polk. Texas reclaimed the lead 15-14, but a Henry kill and a Longhorn attack error sealed a 17-15 victory for the Women of Troy.
USC posted a match-best effort in game three with 11 kills off of 28 attacks (.286) and three aces from sophomore setter Tracy Lindquist for points. Texas' struggles only got worse as the team hit -.033 in a 15-4 defeat that again saw the Longhorns record only four kills.
In the first match of the Texas Invitational, defending national champion and No. 2 Penn State posted a 3-0 triumph (15-3, 15-9, 15-12) over unranked Arkansas. USC will face Arkansas on tomorrow (Sept. 2) at 5 p.m. CST.
