LOS ANGELES - Two days after being upset in the 200-meter backstroke, former Trojan Lenny Krayzelburg reasserted his dominance by winning the 100-meter back to highlight the final day of the seventh annual Janet Evans Invitational on Sunday (July 16) at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium in the meet hosted by USC and presented by Speedo.
Krayzelburg won the 100-meter back in 54.60, one of 14 meet records in the four-day event and only a second off of his world record time in the event (53.60). He also owns the world record in the 200-meter back.
"I was a bit down after Friday (when he lost the 200 back) and I had to refocus," Krayzelburg said. "This is a good confidence boost for me. It's a good time and I'm happy with it. I kind of surprised myself, and it's always good when that happens."
In the most exciting race of the night, South African Ryk Neethling defeated a tough field to win the 1500-meter freestyle in 15:20.24. American and USC sophomore Erik Vendt led for much of the race, but Neethling passed him in the final 150 meters. Vendt finished second in 15:22.66, while fellow Americans Tyler Painter (15:25.94) and Chris Thompson (15:29.00) took third and fourth, respectively.
Said Neethling: "That's what I love to do, race. I don't like swimming by myself. I like to swim with people and that's usually when I'm at my best. I'm really happy with the race. There's been so much talk about the U.S. not having good distance swimmers since 1984. I think they have three really good ones at the moment."
Jennifer Thompson won the 100-meter butterfly in 58.48 and her prelim time of 58.37 set a meet record. She finished ahead of second-place Dara Torres (58.91) and third-place Misty Hyman (59.28). All three train with Stanford.
Mike Mintenko (Pacific Dolphins-Vancouver, Canada) won the men's 100-meter fly in 53.52. His prelim time of 53.10 set a meet record. American Tom Malchow (Wolverine) was second in 54.51.
American B.J. Bedford won the women's 100-meter back in 1:01.99. Staciana Stitts (Irvine Novaquatics), from Carlsbad, Calif., won the women's 100-meter breast in 1:09.49 and Morgan Knabe (Univ. of Calgary) won the men's 100-meter breast in 1:03.58.
Joanne Malar (Univ. of Calgary) won the women's 200-meter IM in 2:15.12, a meet record. Atilla Czene (Sun Devil), from Hungary, also set a meet record in the men's 200-meter IM, winning in 2:02.54.
Katie Zimbone from Boston, won the 1500-meter freestyle in 16:57.36, finishing just ahead of Danielle Bell (Club Island), who took second in 16:57.92
The United States Olympic Trials for swimming will take place Aug. 9-16 in Indianapolis, Ind.
