Caverly Defeats Heyns In 200M Breast At JEI

LOS ANGELES - For the second day in a row, a teenager defeated a world record holder as 15-year-old American Kristen Caverly edged South African Penny Heyns in the 200m breaststroke to highlight the third day of the seventh annual Janet Evans Invitational on Saturday (July 15) at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium in the meet hosted by USC and presented by Speedo.
Caverly (AquaZots), from San Clemente, Calif., swam a 2:29.83, touching just ahead of Heyns, who finished in 2:29.89. Staciana Stitts (Irvine Novaquatics), from Carlsbad, Calif., took third in 2:30.15. A day earlier, 16-year-old Aaron Peirsol upset world record holder Lenny Krayzelburg in the 200-meter backstroke.
"I think this race shows that I'm right up there and I have a chance to make it (the U.S. team in the 200m breaststroke)," Caverly said. "I really wanted to get up there and see how I'd do. I did not believe I won the race. I was giving my whole effort in the finish."
The women's 50-meter freestyle featured three of America's best ever in the event: Amy Van Dyken (1996 Olympic gold medalist in the event), Jenny Thompson (five U.S. titles in the event) and Dara Torres (the American record holder in the event, 24.73).
Torres won the battle this time, taking the event in a meet-record time of 25.04. Thompson took second in 25.22 while Van Dyken was third in 25.32. Interestingly, both Torres and Thompson were coming off a finals race of the 200-meter free about 30 minutes earlier before competing in the sprint.
Costa Rican Claudia Poll won the women's 200-meter free in a meet-record time of 1:58.02. Thompson was second in 1:59.49 while Torres was third in 2:00.25.
South African Ryk Neethling, who won the 800-meter free on Thursday, took the 200-meter free this time in 1:50.98. Neethling passed Bela Szabados in the final 25 meters for the win. Szabados is a former Trojan who will swim for Hungary in the Sydney Olympics. He finished in 1:51.20.
Anthony Ervin (Phoenix Swim Club) won the men's 50-meter free in a meet-record time of 22.30, edging Bart Kizierowski of Mission Viejo Nadadores (22.32).
Morgan Knabe (University of Calgary) won the men's 200-meter breast in 2:16.91 while club teammates Joanne Malar and Curtis Myden won the women's and men's 400-meter IM in 4:41.71 and 4:22.60, respectively. Both times were meet records.
The meet concludes on Sunday with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. and finals starting at 5 p.m.
