JV Eight Leads Women's Rowing At Pac-10 Championships

Rancho Cordova, Calif. -- 12th-ranked USC women's rowing saw a great performance from the JV Eight boat as the team finished an unexpected third at the Pac-10 Conference Championships on Lake Natoma on Sunday (May 14) afternoon. The JV Eight was the only Women of Troy boat to medal on a day that started out clear and sunny, and finished with strong winds and heavy rain.
Both the Varsity and JV boats qualified for the grand final races. After a restart in the JV race, Cal took a length lead on the Trojans off the line as both boats trailed Washington. As the crews crossed the first 1000, USC began to push but Cal held on to its spot through the end. The Trojans were pressured to defeat Oregon State, who finished fifth, in order to be considered for the NCAA Championships.
Just prior to the finals of the Varsity Eight race the wind and rain, which had begun in the afternoon, began to die down. USC, Cal and Washington charged off the line and together crossed the 500-meter mark. Washington held off Cal for the lead, but USC fell behind Oregon State and missed the bronze medal by nearly four seconds.
The Varsity Four boat advanced to the petite final and finished in third place (8:42.4) behind Saint Mary's (8:26.7) and UC Davis (8:35.5). The Novice Eight raced in the third final, completing the race fourth in a time of 7:55.7.
USC will await the announcement of team invitations for the 2000 NCAA Championships to take place May 26-28.
