Women's Tennis Can't Hold On Against Cardinal

Stanford, Calif. -- The 12th-ranked USC women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 match to top-ranked Stanford this afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto. With the win, Stanford clinched a share of the Pac-10 title, while the Women of Troy (15-7, 4-3 Pac-10) are still competing for a third-place finish.
USC held on through singles play, finishing the six singles matches tied at 3-3 apiece with the Cardinal. To start the afternoon, Stanford's 2nd-ranked Marissa Irvin defeated No. 56 Kara Warkentin 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, and Tiffany Brymer fell to Keiko Tokuda 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6. The Women of Troy then returned to win the next three consecutive at the No. 2, 4 and 5 spots. Veronika Safarova, whose won her last five-straight, upset 47th-ranked Teryn Ashley, 6-3, 6-2, while Jacqui Boyd defeated Gabriela Lastra 6-4, 7-6, and Anita Loyola earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Jennifer Heiser.
Unfortunately Stanford sealed the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. The Cardinal clinched the match at the No. 1 position, as the seventh-ranked duo of Irvin and Ashley defeated Warkentin and Brymer, 8-4.
USC will return to action tomorrow, April 22, against Cal at noon in Berkeley, Calif.
