Rowers Advance To Finals At Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - USC's Varsity and JV Eight boats both advanced to the grand finals at the 2000 San Diego Crew Classic (April 1-2) at Mission Bay. The two teams finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Recognized as one of the most prestigious regattas in the world, the Crew Classic always welcomes top collegiate programs. This year's field featured No. 2 Virginia, No. 3 California, No. 4 USC and Washington, No. 6 Michigan and No. 9 Wisconsin.
The Trojans' Varsity Eight boat appropriately finished fourth in the grand final behind Washington, Cal and Virginia. Washington, who claimed the 2000 Cal Cup with the victory, finished in a time of 6:38.4 - 11.5 seconds ahead of USC (6:49.9) and nearly six seconds ahead of second-place Cal (6:44.2).
Prior to the varsity race, the JV Eight boat finished fifth with a time of 6:57.8. The Trojans trailed fourth-place finisher Oregon State by only 1.2 seconds. Virginia came in first with a time of 6:39.5.
On Saturday (April 1), the novice boat advanced to the third-level final with a time of 7:48.7 in the first qualifying heat.
The Trojans will next face No. 1 Brown and Rutgers in a three-team regatta on Saturday, April 15, in Providence, RI.
