PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island -- USC women's rowing competed against defending national champion Brown and Rutgers Saturday afternoon in a three-team regatta held on the Seekonk River. The fifth-ranked Trojans finished second in both the Varsity Eight and JV Eight races.
USC's Varsity boat fought off headwinds and slack tide to finish the race in a time of 6:53.1. The Trojans finished 11.7 seconds behind Brown (6:41.4), and 11.9 seconds ahead of Rutgers (7:05.0). The Bears managed to jump out to a fast start in the first 1,000 meters of the race, keeping the Trojans unable to mount a comeback in the second half.
USC's JV boat included two novice rowers who were pulled up for the trip after two athletes became ill last week. With the new lineup, the Trojans fell second to Brown in a time of 7:16.0. Facing a more moderate headwind with an outgoing tide, USC did defeat Brown's second boat by 1.2 seconds.
The Trojans return to action on Saturday, April 29, at Belmont's Redwood Shores. USC will face Washington State at 9 a.m., and Kansas at 3 p.m.
