MINNEAPOLIS - Freshman Erik Vendt posted his second second-place finish, this time in the 400m IM, and four other Trojans made finals appearances to highlight the second night of the 2000 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday (March 24) at the Minnesota Aquatics Center.
USC is in seventh with 170 points. Texas is in first (416), followed by Auburn (291), Arizona (241.5), Stanford (185.5), Tennessee (184), California (176) and USC. The meet is being swum in short course meters.
In the prelims of the 400m IM, Vendt's 4:08.22 broke veteran Chad Carvin's American record of 4:11.72 set earlier in March and Belgian Stefan Marne's U.S. Open time of 4:13.35 set in 1994. But it was a short-lived record. In the finals, Michigan sophomore Tim Siciliano topped Vendt's mark, winning the event in 4:06.02. Vendt swam a 4:09.35 for second.
Sophomore Mark Warkentin also finalled in the event, finishing sixth in 4:13.82. Both Warkentin and Vendt also finalled on Thursday in the 400m free. Sophomore Nick Kaschik swam in his second straight consolation finals, taking 16th (4:20.97) in the 400m IM.
Said Vendt about his finals race: "I swam the way I wanted to. It just didn't work out tonight. I was relaxed this morning and I expected to go fast tonight, but it wasn't clicking."
Junior Ryosuke Imai, USC's record holder in the 100y and 200y breast, finished fourth in the 100m breast in 59.72. That lowered his Japanese record in the event he set in prelims when he went 59.89. He also finalled in the event last year.
Freshman Jeff Lee made his first championship appearance of his young career and finished seventh in the 200m free in 1:47.63. He qualified sixth in the event in prelims with a 1:47.01.
Junior Leonardo Costa, who won a swim-off for his finals berth in the 100m back, finished eighth in 52.88. He was tied for eighth after prelims with Stanford's Randall Bal at 1:02.75. He then edged Bal in a swim-off in 1:02.35, just ahead of Bal's 1:02.39, to earn the right to compete in the finals.
The Trojans' 800 free relay of Lee, senior Bret Awbrey, Costa and Vendt finished 10th in 7:16.64.
USC's 200m medley relay of juniors Costa, Slawek Richter, Philippe Demers and Gabe Woodward took fifth in the consolation finals (13th overall) in 1:38.83.
Other finishers included freshman Mike Gausman (400m IM, 31st, 4:26.72), Awbrey (200m free, 18th, 1:48.27), Demers (200m free, 48th, 1:50.89) and Richter (100m breast, 21st, 1:01.60). Sophomore Thomas Kerekjarto was disqualified in the 400m IM for an illegal turn into his freestyle leg.
The meet concludes Saturday (March 25).
