INDIANAPOLIS - Sophomores Kristin MacGregor and Kellie Brennan and freshaman Michala Kwasny each earned All-American honors to highlight USC's first day at the 2000 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind., on Thursday (March 16).
USC, with only six swimmers and one diver competing, was in seventh after the first day with 67.5 points. Georgia was in first with 152 points. The meet is being swum in short course meters.
MacGregor and Kwasny both earned their All-America honors in the 200m IM. MacGregor, who finalled in the 100y breast as a freshman last year at NCAAs, made her first finals appearance in the 200m IM, taking fourth in 2:12.56. Kwasny, making her NCAA debut, tied for sixth in 2:13.38. Kwasny qualified third in the event during prelims in 2:12.11.
Brennan, the two-time defending Pacific-10 Conference champion in the 1-meter springboard, also made her NCAA debut. She finished seventh in the 1-meter with 417.60 points.
"We had a good day," USC Coach Mark Schubert said. "Every swimmer scored. Kristin was really outstanding and made her first 200y IM finals. Michala, after qualifying third in prelims, probably got a little nervous in her first finals, but it was a good start for her and for the team. I think we can move up from here."
USC's 400 medley relay team was seeded 16th entering the meet but reached the finals after qualifying eighth in prelims. USC also took eighth in the finals as the team of senior Paige Francis, MacGregor, Kwasny and freshman Jennifer Parmenter swam 4:07.43. All four swimmers earn All-American honors for reaching the finals.
Freshman Asa Sandlund and junior Corrie Murphy both scored in the 400m free, reaching the consolation finals. Sandlund took 13th in 4:11.10 and Murphy was 15th in 4:12.90. They both posted personal bests in prelims as Sandlund swam a 4:10.73 and Murphy swam a 4:11.49.
Francis took 27th in the 50m free (25.77) and Parmenter was 20th in the 200m IM (2:15.49).
