USC swimming coach Mark Schubert was named 1999 Coach of the Year by United States Swimming and USC graduate Lenny Krayzelburg was named 1999 United States Swimmer of the Year, United States Swimming announced over the weekend.
Schubert was also named the 1999 American Swimming Coaches Association Co-Coach of the Year (Stanford's Richard Quick was the other recipient this year) and the 1999 United States Olympic Committee Coach of the Year. His ASCA honor is his fifth such award from the organization, more than any other coach.
Schubert earned the U.S. Swimming Coach of the Year award, recently renamed the Doc Councilman Award, in recognition of the remarkable number of USC and Trojan Club swimmers that have had success on the national and international swimming scene. Schubert, a 1996 International Swimming Hall of Fame inductee, had a Hall of Fame year in 1999, placing 12 swimmers on international teams. His swimmers made their presence felt at all levels.
Lenny Krayzelburg earned his U.S. Swimmer of the Year honor at the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships, shattering both the 100m and 200m backstroke world records, becoming the first American male to break two world records in two different events in 16 years. He also broke the 50m back world mark in a time trial.
Lindsay Benko, a U.S. team captain, had the best meet of her life as well at the Pan-Pacs, winning five medals, swimming on an American record relay team and posting the third-fastest time in the 200m free in U.S. history. Other international gold medalists coached by Schubert include four-time World University Games winner Mark Warkentin and Pan Am Games champions Karen Campbell and Leonardo Costa.
Schubert, who is beginning his seventh season as the coach of both the men's and women's swim programs at Troy, recently completed a stint as the head men's coach for the U.S. team at the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney, Australia. Schubert will also coach America's men's squad at the 2000 Olympics at the same locale.
First-year USC diving coach Hongping Li was also named USOC Developmental Diving Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year last week.
