USC swimmers finished off a fantastic showing at the U.S. Summer National Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., in fine fashion, posting a handful of wins and leading the Trojan Swim Club to the women's and combined team titles Aug. 10.
NBC will broadcast delayed coverage of the meet on Sunday (Aug. 15) from 2:30 to 4 p.m. (EDT).
USC men's and women's swim coach Mark Schubert, the director of Trojan Swim Club and the head coach for the U.S. men's swim teams competing at the upcoming Pan Pacific Championships and the 2000 Summer Olympics, earned his 64th and 65th national titles, making him the winningest coach in U.S. Nationals history.
"The thing that was really fun about this meet was the kids caught fire and everyone got enthusiastic and got into it," Schubert said. "We had so many swimmers that were part of it - experienced swimmers and new up-and-comers."
On Aug. 9, outgoing senior Lindsay Benko won her second title of the meet and fourth overall when she defeated Brooke Bennett to win the 400-meter freestyle in 4:11.31.
That same day, Lenny Krayzelburg, a 1998 USC graduate, won his second title of the meet and set a U.S. Open and meet record when he swam a 54.00 to win the 100m backstroke. It was the fifth-fastest time ever and marked the fifth consecutive time he has swept both backstrokes at the national meet. After swimming .11 off of the world record in the 200m back earlier in the meet, his time in the 100m back was only .14 off of Jeff Rouse's world standard of 53.86.
Sophomore Mark Warkentin continued his impressive finalist run by taking second in both the 400m free (3:53.80) and the 1500m free (15:31.63).
Kristine-Quance Julian, married to former USC swimming All-American Jeff Julian and already having a fantastic comeback meet nine months after giving birth to her first child, continued her return to the elite swimming scene by winning the 200m IM in 2:10.06. Quance finished just ahead of incoming USC freshman Michala Kwasny, who took second in the 200m IM in 2:16.61. Fellow incoming freshman Jennifer Parmenter also finalled in the event and was eighth (8:18.95).
Quance was also sixth in the 100m breast (1:11.84) and sophomore Kristin MacGregor was seventh in 1:12.24.
Outgoing senior Karen Campbell, fresh off a title in the 100m butterfly at the Pan Am Games, took third in the event at the U.S. Nationals with a time of 59.91. Kwasny took sixth in the event in 1:01.39. Also, outgoing senior Michael Williams was fifth in the men's 100m fly in 54.43.
Next up for USC swimmers is the Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney, Australia, Aug. 22-29. Trojans set to compete for the U.S. are Benko, Krayzelburg, Brad Bridgewater and incoming freshman and distance phenom Erik Vendt.
