Women's Volleyball Cruises Past USF, Sam Houston State

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The third-ranked USC women's volleyball squad ran its record to 3-1 with convincing victories over University of San Francisco and Sam Houston State in the USF/Saint Mary's College Power Bar Invitational. The meetings were the first ever between USC and both opponents.
The Women of Troy opened the tourney in fine fashion, quickly dispatching USF 3-0 (15-6, 15-5, 15-2) on September 4. The match lasted just 1:05. Senior outside hitter Jennifer Kessy paced the Trojan attack with 8 kills while hitting .313 (8-3-16). Kessy also added a team match-high-tying seven digs. USC limited the Dons to remarkable .000 hitting percentge for the match. With the loss, USF fell to 0-2 on the season.
The Trojans were just as impressive the following day, defeating Sam Houston State 3-0 (15-4, 15-3, 15-5) in a match that required exactly one hour. Kessy again led the team with a match-high 13 kills and an impressive .600 hitting percentage. As a team, the Trojans hit .493 for the match, committing just six hitting errors (43-6-75). Senior middle blocker Jasmina Marinkovic pitched in seven kills in the victory. SHSU fell to 2-2 with the setback.
USC will return to action on Friday, September 11 when it takes on Indiana in its opening match of the 1998 Wisconsin Tournament in Madison, Wisc.
