Women's Swimming Remains Unbeaten

LOS ANGELES - The USC men's and women's swimming and diving teams stayed unbeaten last weekend as the Women of Troy defeated host UC Santa Barbara, 324-161, and Texas A&M, 307-194, and the Trojans downed the Gauchos, 352-195, in Santa Barbara on Jan. 16.
Senior All-American Lindsay Benko posted a pair of season bests in winning the 100 (52.27) and 1000 freestyles (9:40.63) while junior Paige Francis swept the backstrokes, winning the 100 (57.13) and the 200 (2:02.55). Senior All-American Karen Campbell won the 100 butterfly (54.66) and sophomore Hillary Biscay took the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.05. Women of Troy freshmen also contributed victories as Carolyn Conrad took first in the 200 free (1:52.76), Kristin MacGregor won the 100 breast (1:03.25) and Amy Migawa finished first in the 400 IM (4:24.69). On the men's side, senior All-American Bela Szabados pulled off wins in three events, taking firsts in the 200 fly (1:53.26), 100 free (46.56) and the 500 free (4:34.64). Other winners included sophomore Philippe Demers in the 200 free (1:40.36), sophomore Slawek Richter in the 100 breast (58.25), sophomore Nick Smith in the 50 free (20.65), freshman Jay Sayko in the 200 back (1:53.87) and sophomore Ryosuke Imai in the 100 fly (50.33). USC swimmers compete against two of their fiercest rivals in upcoming meets. The women swim against California on Jan. 29 in Berkeley and at Stanford on Jan. 30. The men make their Bay Area swing the following week, competing against the Bears on Feb. 5 and the Cardinal on Feb. 6. The Stanford teams are both defending national champions.
