STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Gabrielle Rose (Memphis, TN/St. Mary's Episcopal HS) won two events to lead second-ranked Stanford (6-2 overall, 3-1 in the Pac-10) to a 166.5-133.5 dual-meet victory over No. 5 USC (5-2, 2-2) on Saturday afternoon at deGuerre Pool. Stanford has now won 39 straight dual meets at deGuerre Pool dating back to the 1987-88 season, and is 38-0 at home under 11th-year head coach Richard Quick.
USC opened the meet by capturing the 400 medley relay, and held the lead through the first eight events. Stanford would have taken the lead after the fourth event, the 100 backstroke, but junior Catherine Fox (Shawnee Mission, KS/Bishop Miege HS), who won the race easily, was disqualified for swimming under water beyond 15 yards. Stanford took the lead for good when Rose won the 100 freestyle, with her Cardinal teammates also placing second, third and fifth. Rose also won the 200 freestyle.
The Trojans were led by senior Karen Campbell (Portage, MI/Hackett Catholic Central HS), who won both the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. She broke a seven-year-old deGuerre Pool record in the 100 fly, swimming a 53.54, 0.14 seconds under Stanford alum Janel Jorgensen's mark.
The meet marked the final home appearances of Stanford seniors Elin Austevoll (Os, Norway/Os Gymnas), Alison Fealey (Cincinnati, OH/St. Ursula Academy), Kari Kokka (San Jose, CA/Independence HS), Chantal Rawn (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich HS), Emily Smith (Bronxville, NY/Bronxville HS), Tricia Tempio (Ambler, PA/Ridgewood HS), Suzanne Toledo (Kalamazoo, MI/Portage Northern HS) and Carissa Zenorini (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley Regional HS). That group will graduate in June undefeated at deGuerre Pool.
Stanford returns to action next Saturday (2/6) when it competes againt No. 4 Southern Methodist and No. 10 Texas. The double-dual meet is at 1:00 p.m. CST at the University of Texas Natatorium in Austin, TX. USC hosts No. 17 UCLA on Feb. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
