LOS ANGELES - The USC women's soccer team posted one of the biggest wins in school history, defeating No. 7 BYU, 1-0, at the Coliseum on Friday.
The Women of Troy (4-3) defeated a Top 25 team for the second time in the last five days (and played three in the last five days). USC beat then-No. 18 Baylor, 1-0, last Friday and lost to then-No. 12 Nebraska, 2-0, on Sunday.
The Cougars (6-1) were handed their first loss. BYU is ranked No. 7 by Soccer Buzz.
Sophomore midfielder Andrea Warner (Dana Point/Dana Hills HS) scored the game's only goal in the eighth minute and senior goalkeeper Karin Puccinelli (Cupertino/St. Francis HS) came up big with four saves, including a stop of a penalty kick in the 56th minute.
"This is a big win for the program because this is the kind of win you need to get into the NCAA Tournament," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "I'm proud of the way we played and battled. We just need to keep playing like this in our future matches and finish more of our chances."
After a nice through pass from senior midfielder Erica De Vitis (Coto de Caza/Santa Margarita HS) up the right side, Warner outsprinted a defender to the ball and kicked it past the onrushing goalkeeper from about 15 yards out. Senior midfielder Carol Hatcher (Kapolei, HI/Kalani HS) also had an assist on the play.
BYU had a chance to tie the game in the second half when a Cougar player's hard shot deflected off the hand of a USC defender, causing the official to call for a penalty kick. But Puccinelli guessed right on senior forward Shauna Rohbock's shot, diving low and to her left to make the save.
The Cougars took 10 shots in the second half and outshot the Women of Troy, 17-12.
The Women of Troy host Fresno State on Friday (Sept. 25) at the Coliseum at 3 p.m.
