Women's Rowing Takes Two at Collegiate Championships

LOS ANGELES - The No. 5 USC women's rowing team finished first in the varsity and junior varsity eight races at the California Collegiate Rowing Championships held on Saturday (April 17) at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
"The varsity eight won very easily and for the wind conditions both boats posted good times," USC Coach George Jenkins said. "We didn't change any bodies in the boat, but we did change the order around a little bit and we got a little more speed out of the boat."
In the women's grand final of the varsity eight race, USC finished first with a time of 6:38.80, which was almost 10 seconds ahead of second-place San Diego State, which posted a time of 6:48.0.
In the junior varsity eight race, the Women of Troy dominated, posting a winning time of 7:01.80 - which was 10 seconds ahead of the second place boat from Cal State Stanislaus. San Diego State finished third with a time of 7:16.6.
In other action, USC's women's novice four boat finished fifth in its race with a time of 8:45.70.
The Women of Troy next face Michigan State and Oregon State on Saturday (April 24) in Foster City, Calif. The Spartans and Beavers will be the first ranked opponents that USC has faced since competing in the San Diego Crew Classic on March 27-28. Michigan State is ranked No. 16 in the latest U.S. Rowing National Collegiate Rowing Coaches Poll while Oregon State is ranked No. 12.
"This the first ranked competition that we've had since San Diego and we need to see if we can compete at that level," Jenkins said. "But after their performances last weekend, both the JV and varsity boats will be ready for Saturday."
