Water Polo Wins UCSD Tournament

SAN DIEGO - The USC women's water polo program took a huge step forward over the weekend, beating rivals UCLA and California for the first time ever and winning the UC San Diego Tournament.
The Women of Troy opened the season at the tournament and won all five games, including a 4-3 victory over Cal in the final and a 5-3 win over UCLA in the semifinals.
Previously, USC was 0-11 against Cal and 0-10 against UCLA.
Senior goalie Bernice Orwig was named the tournament's Defensive MVP, holding USC's opponents to an average of 3.4 goals a game.
In early-round games, USC beat Long Beach State, 11-5; Hawaii, 8-4; and UC Davis, 8-2.
USC's top scorers over the weekend were freshman Aniko Pelle (seven goals), freshman Sandra Milicev (six goals), sophomore Jennifer Durley (five goals) and freshman Suzannah Johnson (five goals).
The Women of Troy travel to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (Feb. 20) for a noon match that will be their MPSF opener.
