LOS ANGELES (AP) - Brian Scalabrine scored 26 points, including 15 in the second half, to lead Southern Cal to a 74-59 nonconference win over American University Monday night.
After staking the Trojans (7-1) to a 13-point lead in the first half, Scalabrine put the game away late in the second half. The 6-foot-9 sophomore forward scored eight in a 10-0 run that gave USC a 21-point lead, 68-47, with 5:37 remaining.
Jeff Trepagnier added 18 points as USC rebounded from its only loss, a 107-78 setback at Kansas on Dec. 12. USC hadn't played since because of finals.
Ossie Jones scored 12 points to lead American (3-7), which hadn't played in 11 days also due to finals. Keith Gray added nine points.
The Americans, 1-6 on the road this season, were caught shorthanded following the loss of their top two scorers on the season.
Freshman guard Bobby Thompson missed the game because of a knee injury. Freshman center Patrick Doctor picked up his third personal foul eight minutes into the game and had to sit out long stretches. Doctor picked up his fourth foul three minutes into the second half and fouled out with 6:04 remaining. He scored only four points.
