LAS VEGAS (AP) - Elias Ayuso scored 16 points and teammate Brian Scalabrine had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Southern California to a 71-68 victory over UNLV Friday.
The Trojans scored first and never trailed in the non-conference game at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Southern California frustrated the Rebels with a tight zone defense, holding UNLV's Kaspars Kambala to a mere 3 points - 18 below his average.
Southern California led 36-26 at the close of the first quarter and held a 42-35 lead at halftime.
UNLV drew within four points, 51-47, with 5:19 remaining in the game. Then Scalabrine scored a field goal and Adam Spanich hit a three-pointer to put the Trojans ahead 56-47.
Shawn Marion led UNLV with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Southern California freshman Brandon Granville scored 15 points and had seven assists and six rebounds.
