Swimmers Compete at Short Course Worlds

Los Angeles - While many of their teammates were at the U.S. Spring Nationals in Long Island, N.Y., a small contingent of USC swimmers competed at the FINA World Short Course Championships in Hong Kong, China, April 1-4.
Junior Paige Francis had a fine meet, posting a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100m (1:01.27) and 200m back (2:10.19). She also was 10th in the 50m back (29.03).
Freshman Leonardo Costa, representing Brazil, took sixth in the 200m back in 1:56.40.
Senior co-captain Mike Williams competed in four events, highlighted by a ninth-place mark in the 50m fly (24.20). He actually qualified second overall in the prelims in 24.00, but just missed the finals cut in the semifinals with his 24.20 mark. Williams also finished 14th in the 100m fly (53.34), took 33rd in the 50m free (23.35) and was 36th in the 100m free (51.37).
Fellow senior co-captain Mark Kwok, a native of event host Hong Kong, also competed in four events, his best finish coming in the 400m free (3:54.35, 17th). He also was 19th in the 400m IM (4:23.57), 25th in the 200m fly (2:03.57) and 32nd in the 200m IM (2:06.09).
Sophomore Philippe Demers took 14th in the 200m fly in 1:58.77.
