Scalabrine Named Pac-10's Top Newcomer

USC sophomore center Brian Scalabrine is this year's recipient of the Fred Hessler Award, given to the Pac-10's top newcomer (non-freshman), the Pac-10 announced today.
For the seventh straight season, the team was selected by the Pac-10 radio play-by-play announcers. USC's Rodrick Rhodes also won the award in 1997.
Scalabrine has started all 25 games and is averaging 14.9 points and 6.5 rebounds, while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and 78.9 percent from the foul line. He transferred from Highline CC in Des Moines, Wash.
He was joined on the All-Newcomer first team by Oregon State's Josh Steinthal, Washington State's Jan-Michael Thomas and Oregon's Alex Scales and Darius Wright.
