No.6 Men's Tennis Defeats Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - Injuries forced the No. 4 and No. 6 players for Arizona to sit out of today's match as the Wildcats were defeated by USC, 5-2. At the No. 1 position, Arizona senior Roland Kupka (Fritzlar, Germany) was outlasted by USC's George Bastl, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. At No. 2, the Trojans' Patrick Gottesleben defeated Arizona sophomore Michel Stopa (Paris, France), by a 6-3, 7-6 (4) count.
The Wildcats claimed victories at the No. 3 single spot as senior Mike MacKay (Phoenix, Ariz.) defeated USC's Kyle Spencer, 6-3, 6-4 and at No. 4 where UA senior Jerome Oliveri (Fort-De-France, Martinique), survived a marathon with the Trojans' Roman Kukal, 7-6 (0), 2-6, 7-6 (3). At No. 5, Fernando Samayoa of USC claimed victory over Adnan Novo (Sarjevo, Bosnia) of Arizona by a score of 6-1, 6-4. The No. 6 position saw the first Pac-10 action for Arizona freshman Mike Huss (San Diego, Calif.) as he lost to Akram Zaman of USC, 6-0, 6-1.
At doubles, USC claimed the point by winning the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The lone Wildcat victory came at No. 2 doubles, as Jerome Oliveri and Michel Stopa defeated the Trojans' Patrick Gottesleben and Akram Zaman, 8-3.
