Men's Volleyball Falls to No. 1 Long Beach State

LOS ANGELES - Despite a match-high 29 kills from Brook Billings, the No. 10-ranked USC men's volleyball team fell to top-ranked Long Beach State, 15-12, 8-15, 15-6, 16-14, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (March 27) at the Pyramid.
USC is now 11-9 overall and 7-7 in the MPSF, while the 49ers improved to 17-1 overall and 14-1 in the MPSF to clinch the Pacific Division title.
It was the Trojans' third loss of 1999 to Long Beach State. USC extended the 49ers to 5 games in the first 2 meetings and almost did so again, as Troy led 14-12 in the fourth game before falling.
Matt Prosser had 16 kills (while hitting .444) and 9 blocks for Long Beach State, while teammates David McKienzie and Jim Polster added 15 kills each (Polster also had 8 blocks).
For USC, Eli Fairfield had 15 kills, while Omar Rawi had 11 blocks and Donald Suxho had 8 blocks and 8 digs.
USC, in the hunt for a berth in the MPSF post-season tournament in late April, takes a week off before closing out its regular season with 5 road MPSF matches, beginning April 6 and 7 at UC San Diego and San Diego State, respectively.
