Men's Tennis Squad Downs Pac-10 Rival Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 17th-ranked Arizona State men's tennis team (1-1, 0-1 Pac-10) fell in a close Pac-10 dual to 15th-ranked USC (4-0, 1-0 Pac-10), 4-3 today at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The Trojans came away with the early doubles point, which turned out to be the winning margin, as they won all three doubles matches.
In the singles portion, Arizona State and USC split the six singles matches each winning three apiece.
At the No. 1 slot, ASU tied the dual at one when 31st-ranked Gustavo Marcaccio won easily in straight sets over USC's Patrick Gottesleben, 6-2, 6-4.
Next simultaneously, ASU and USC each split a match with ASU winning on court No. 5 as Matt Klinger defeated Gregg Hill, 7-5, 6-4 and USC's Nicholas Rainey defeated ASU's Tim Hammond, 6-4, 6-3 on court No. 6.
The Trojans then closed out the dual with victories on courts No. 2 and 3. USC's Andrew Park, ranked 48th nationally, downed ASU's Jeff Williams, 6-2, 7-6 (4) and Ryan Moore defeated Alex Osterrieth, 6-3, 6-2.
ASU would knotch one more win on court No. 4 as Ed Carter won in three sets over USC's Roman Kukal, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Arizona State will continue Pac-10 action on Saturday, January 30 as they host fifth-ranked UCLA at Noon.
